General Information

The Slippery Rock University Office of Sustainability is pleased to announce a new environmental summer camp experience for high school students currently in grades 8 through 11. The focus of the camp is to encourage high school teachers and students to engage in authentic community service learning projects that address local environmental issues.

Students are invited to join us for a week of fun, excitement, outdoor education, and adventure for only $100, including room, board, and all activity costs.

As part of the camp, students will experience leadership development activities at Slippery Rock’s Leadership Development Center, a Nautical Nature pontoon boat tour, canoeing and kayaking at Moraine State Park, hiking at McConnell’s Mills State Park, tours of the rare Eastern Prairie ecosystem at Jennings Environmental Education Center, as well as other on-campus recreational activities.

Students will explore topics such as: sustainable food and agriculture, water and air quality, environmental ethics, climate change, and alternative energy systems.

Partners for the project include, Midwestern Intermediate Unit IV, and the PA Department of Conservation and Natural Resources at Moraine State Park, McConnells Mill State Park, and the Jennings Environmental Center. Participants will be taking part in a number of outdoor adventure activities, as well as learning from acclaimed environmental educators about the rare geographic and geologic features of the Pennsylvania state parks.
